A new fenced-in space has officially opened for Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»dog owners and care-givers to take their furry friends.
The off-leash area at Heather Park in Fairview opened this weekend with 1,200 square meters of fenced-in, woodchip covered parkland. The area has some agility features for dogs, including a ramp, stepping stones, and hurdles. There are several benches for humans to relax on while watching their dogs.
There are a few basic rules for users of the area, including picking up after a dog, keep dogs within sight and from being aggressive, and no digging. Dogs must be kept on a leash near the area, as well.
The new off-leash area at Heather Street and West 18th Avenue (south of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»General Hospital) is meant to alleviate the lack of dog-friendly areas in Fairview and Mount Pleasant, according to a press release from the parks board.
"The area’s design was shaped by feedback from over 1,300 people who participated in two rounds of public engagement," states the parks board.
The off-leash area is the first of three dog-friendly projects the city has planned for 2025.
"Later this summer, work is anticipated to be completed on the construction of a new off-leash area at Granville Park in Fairview and the renewal and expansion of Downtown’s Emery Barnes Park off-leash area," they add.
