A pedestrian has died following an incident on Highway 99 around 6:30 a.m. this morning.Â
The incident occurred in the southbound lane of Highway 99 near Steveston Highway. Richmond RCMP is assisting Deas Island Freeway Patrol in the investigation, which is still in early stages.
According to Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet of the BC RCMP, police responded to a call of someone down at the side of the highway and the cause is still being determined.
"At this point a vehicle hasn't been located," said Shoihet.
Both southbound lanes of Highway 99 were closed for several hours this morning. Traffic was diverted through the Steveston Highway exit and then back to the highway, according to Mounties.
The southbound lanes reopened after 12 p.m. Congestion remains heavy in the area.Â
