To the editor:
Bravo to Tracey Young for her well-written letter on overgrown trees in the city. Our strata has been sending numerous letters and requests to the park board over the last 15 years about the huge, overgrown maple trees on our street in Kitsilano.
These trees used to be trimmed up and pruned every four years. Now, the city pruners show up every eight years or so and cut a few limbs off as to not ruin their shape. Trouble is they have no shape, as the limbs lurch across the street at all angles, and one is so crooked it looks like it will topple over at any minute.
The owners on the south side of our strata now enjoy sitting in the dark all summer with the lights on. So much for saving electricity and for re-sale value of our suites.
In the fall, we get to rake and bag all the leaves on a daily basis and we provide the bags as well as the city doesn't.
The latest response to our request was a cheeky one. You chose to live on that street, and you only lose six months of light a year. Meanwhile, as Young says, they prune the little trees up and down the side streets. Go figure on that one! Too many trees, not enough pruners?
