To the editor:
Re: "Vision pokes hornet's nest at community centres," Feb. 1.
As a resident of Vancouver, I did not realize how many park board activities, services, equipment and facilities have been funded by community centre associations in the last 40 years. Along with paying my taxes and recreation fees, I have been contributing a lot more money than that to supplement the running of our parks and community centres.
It appears to me that blurred Vision is what Vision Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»has regarding its responsibility to provide recreational services. Its plan is supposed to make things "equal," but anyone can go to any program at any centre in the city. What is unequal about that? People who are less affluent than myself are privy to many free activities or supplements that I don't qualify for because I worked and paid taxes my whole life. I am OK with that, but how is that equal?
Vision Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»is also the group that tore down a perfectly good ice rink at Riley Park because they now have Hillcrest, which is not a hockey or figure skating-friendly rink for spectators. There are no bleachers or proper seating areas.
Don't try to flaunt a lousy idea under the guise of equality.
