RE: "Safe injection fight," Aug. 31. As a community health nurse, B.C. Nurses' Union member, and Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»Coastal Health employee, I have traditionally received my flu shot every year. But, since my employer has introduced this draconian, "mandatory" flu shot policy, I am going to refuse it this season on principle.
The right to accept or refuse health care interventions is a basic human right and needs to be upheld. Although it is not mentioned in the press releases regarding mandatory flu shots, my employer has recently introduced an employee attendance policy that punishes health care workers for using the sick time to which they are entitled. This policy encourages workers to come to work sick, increasing the risk of spreading infections to both staff and patients.
Once again, our health care administrators have missed the mark.
