Re: "Isolation bad for democracy," Oct. 5
Tom Sandborn is right that we, as a society, need to make more efforts to connect with each other. The population that is most vulnerable are our seniors who, due to economic and family situations, live alone in their homes. There are many studies to prove that social isolation in the elderly leads to cognitive decline. As a society we are not only responsible for the well-being of our children, but I would hope the care and well-being of our parents and grandparents. Those who are part of the sandwich generation know full well the difficulty in managing the simultaneous care of young and old. Let us help each other, know who your vulnerable seniors are in your neighbourhood, check in once in a while, offer help and companionship. For while it has been said before "it takes a village to raise a child," I would add that most importantly "it takes a village to care for our elderly."
