Re: "Aboriginal school enrolment sits at six students, " July 18.
We opposed the motion to approve opening the school this September because the concept materialized too late. We do not disagree with the concept of an aboriginal school on the Sir William Macdonald elementary site and argue the survey responses punctuated a warning that support was marginal.
A delay of a year would have provided time for getting broad support.
As indicated by registration of six students from Macdonald school, there was not time to sufficiently market the school and select a cross-section of students to reflect the concept of a district program. Efforts are promised to intensify recruitment and reach a threshold of 12 students for a K-7 school. Hopefully, the take-up will provide the numbers required.
