Unions share wealth while think-tanks stew

Re: "Be thankful for unions this Labour Day," Aug. 29.

Kudos to Courier columnist Tim Sandborn for his thorough defense of the much-maligned labour movement.

My own long-standing argument when encountering so-called "union bashers" is simple and to the point: the only countries where unions are rare or non-existent are either communist or part of the Third World. That fact in itself speaks volumes as to the wealth-sharing economic benefits of organized labour.

I would add that thinktanks like the Fraser Institute or C.D. Howe Institute, those supposed defenders of capitalism, and their stubborn refusal to acknowledge the positive standard-of-living-raising effect of unions, is to my mind, enough to strip them of any credibility whatsoever.
