French composer duo ClĂ©ment Ducol and Camille took home the original song award at for their track, âEl Mal.â
In January, âEl Malâ earned the pair in the same category.
The musical is a lot of things â a musical, a transgender parable, and frequently criticized for its
âWe are so grateful,â Camille said in her acceptance speech. âWe wrote âEl Malâ as a song to denounce corruption, and we hope it speaks to the role music and art can play and continue to play as a force of good and progress in the world.â
The award was presented by Mick Jagger. âI wasnât the first choice,â he joked. âThe producers really wanted Bob Dylan to do it.â
Ducol and Camille beat Diane Warren for âThe Journeyâ from âThe Six Triple Eight,â Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Brandi Carlile and Andrew Watt for âNever Too Lateâ from âElton John: Never Too Late,â and Abraham Alexander, Brandon Marcel and Black Pumasâ Adrian Quesada for âLike A Birdâ from âSing Sing.â
They also beat themselves: Their composition âMi Caminoâ from âEmilia PĂ©rezâ was also up for the award.
The first-time Oscar nominees had a total of three nominations, including original score, at .
âYou go from anxiety to relief, and youâre filled up with energy and you need that,â Camille in January, when nominations were announced. âWeâve worked so much, and weâve worked so much for the campaign ... I feel very fulfilled and very happy for all the team.â
Camille said ârepresents something very important.â
âItâs a very free, provocative and empathic, compassionate movie. And I really think this is what we need now.â
âItâs totally incredible. I was like, âWhat?â Itâs three nominations. Itâs huge,â added Ducol. âWe were involved at the beginning of the construction of the story in music ... So everything is linked together, is woven together between the script, the screenplay, the songs. And so, we feel like itâs our story, our movie ... Itâs not just a musical or reflecting a story or reflecting action in the movie. The music and the songs, in this movie, is the script. It is the story.â
In another music category, first-time Academy Award nominee Daniel Blumberg is He took home the trophy for original score for âThe Brutalistâ on Sunday.
Blumberg beat Ducol and Camille (âEmilia PĂ©rezâ), Kris Bowers (âThe Wild Robotâ), Volker Bertelmann (âConclaveâ) and John Powell and Stephen Schwartz (âWickedâ).
âI've been an artist for 20 years now,â Blumberg said in his acceptance speech. "And when I met (director) Brady (Corbet) I met my artistic soulmate.â
follows LĂĄzlĂł TĂłth, a fictional visionary Hungarian architect who escaped the Holocaust, sailed to the United States to find his American Dream and created the style of architecture the film takes its name from.
When the nominations were announced in January, Blumberg that he was actually with Corbet when he learned of his first-ever nod. âItâs been quite a surreal day,â he said. The pair shared a hug when the news arrived.
ââThe Brutalistâ was always such an important project for me,â Blumberg continued, describing the team behind it as dedicated to making âsomething with urgency, to make something with no compromise.â
