I'd be lying if I said I wasn't absolutely thrilled to see egg nog popping up on Twitter this evening. Nog is one of the beats I've been writing about with passion here since 2009, and over the past few years it around October 1st.
Each year the dairy companies seem to push back the release date by a day or two. It started when this wonderful beverage started to become a Thanksgiving staple and it's been creeping ever since. The premium stuff (Avalon) doesn't go on sale until November and is worth the wait (I know this because I was the official in 2015). However a sales strategy by the brands that aren't massive crowd favourites is to get a jump on the competition and be the only nog on the shelf, if only for a couple of days. This year Lucerne has gone for broke by putting it out a full 2 weeks earlier than normal; it's available at Safeway as of right now.
