Han Sim of Burnaby won $1 million in the July 5, 2025 Lotto 6/49 draw.

Most folks these days grumble that buying a cup of coffee costs too much, but for one lucky local, tagging along with his son to grab a cup of joe wound up earning him a cool $1 million.

Burnaby resident Han Sim headed out on the coffee errand and bought a ticket for the July 5 Lotto 6/49 draw on a whim from the Save-On-Foods inside Madison Centre on Lougheed Highway, according to the BCLC.

On a return visit to Save-On-Foods to get some groceries, Sim checked his numbers.

“I googled the combo eight, matched three numbers and I looked at the Extra and I matched two numbers," he described in a BCLC media release. Sim then checked in with the retailer and confirmed he'd won the million-dollar prize.

The news was so good he had to wake up his wife to tell her.

“She was still sleeping; she couldn’t believe it!” said Sim.

First up on the docket for the Sim family is to head to Harrison Hot Springs for a holiday and a nice meal. Sim also says he will help his sons out with their mortgages.

For now, that chance outing for a coffee turning into a life-changing moment is a bit surreal.

“I think it will feel more real once I deposit [the cheque] at the bank!” added Sim.
