The Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»weather forecast doesn't exactly bode well for sunbathing over the Victoria Day long weekend.
Environment Canada meteorologist Matt Loney says locals may have only one day to enjoy some sunshine in between systems rolling through the Lower Mainland beginning Friday, May 16.
"It's a bit of an unsettled weekend with an upper disturbance that's anchored just off the coast and a couple of migratory disturbances inland," he tells V.I.A.
Starting on Friday, continuous rain will fall through Saturday morning with amounts up to 10 to 15 mm. Holdover showers will continue through Saturday, with embedded thunderstorms possible during the night.
Daytime highs are expected to range a few degrees below the seasonal average on Friday and Saturday, reaching 13 C and 14 C, respectively (the seasonal average is 17 C). During this time of year, "we still have some colder air in the atmosphere," Loney adds.
Long weekend Metro Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»weather forecast includes one day of possible sunshine
Sunday offers the only possibility for pleasant weather, with a mix of sun and clouds expected as rainfall eases in the early morning. Temperatures will also feel milder, reaching a high of 16 C.
"This is the best time for locals to plan their outdoor activities," he notes.
An organized storm is expected very late on Sunday night, producing ample rainfall through Monday morning and much of the day. Precipitation amounts of between 15 to 20 mm are expected.
Showers are expected to ease Monday night as a weak ridge begins to build through Tuesday.
Loney points out the potential for a longer stretch of warmer weather and sunshine with stronger ridging continuing through next week, although it is still too early to "hang our hats" on that prediction.
"Next weekend may be nice," he notes.
Travellers headed on B.C. highways this weekend should brace for potentially hazardous driving conditions in B.C.'s mountain passes, including the Coquihalla and the Okanagan Connector.
